GitHub will migrate its entire infrastructure to Microsoft Azure within the next 24 months. This information comes from internal documents reported by The New Stack. With this decision, GitHub ends the operation of its own data centers in favor of the Microsoft Cloud – despite technical risks and at the expense of new product features.
According to GitHub CTO Vladimir Fedorov, this step is necessary to meet the increasing demand from AI features like Copilot. The existing infrastructure, particularly the central data center in Virginia, has reached its capacity limit. The complete migration is expected to be finished in 12 months, with a six-month buffer for parallel operation.
The consequence: Developer teams have been internally urged to postpone planned features to prioritize the migration. The goal is to completely detach GitHub from its own data centers and operate entirely on Azure in the future.
A core issue is the complexity of the existing architecture. Particularly critical is the relocation of central MySQL databases, which currently run on bare-metal hardware. According to the report, GitHub employees expressed concerns about additional outages resulting from the migration. In recent months, there have been repeated disruptions, partly due to infrastructure bottlenecks.
GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 but initially remained largely independent. With the departure of CEO Thomas Dohmke in August 2025 and closer integration into Microsoft’s organizational structure, this is now changing. The full migration to Azure is a strategic step towards internal consolidation – with immediate impacts on customers and developers.
