Artificial intelligence is currently transforming not only products, processes, and business models but also the structure of digital dependencies. When these data structures are tightly integrated with a specific platform provider, a particularly strong form of dependency arises. Switching providers then means not only migrating infrastructure but also rebuilding data pipelines, training processes, and model logic.

Many companies have already heavily tied their infrastructure to large platform providers in recent years. Proprietary databases, messaging systems, identity services, or observability platforms often form the backbone of modern applications.
When AI is additionally integrated into this ecosystem, these dependencies are further intensified.
Models access existing data structures. Training pipelines use existing platform services. Deployment processes align with existing infrastructure models.
The platform thus becomes not only an infrastructure provider but also a data platform, development environment, and AI ecosystem.
Exiting becomes correspondingly more difficult.
For this reason, infrastructure becomes a strategic decision again in the AI era. The question is no longer just where applications run. The question is under what conditions data, models, and platform components are operated.
Companies need to decide how much control they want to retain over these structures.
Open technologies play a central role here. Containerized workloads, [Kubernetes]-based platforms, and standardized data formats enable building AI infrastructures independent of individual platform providers.
Models can run on different infrastructures. Training pipelines can be operated in a containerized manner. Observability stacks can be realized with open tools.
This approach is more complex than using fully integrated platform services. At the same time, it creates an important prerequisite: technological agility.
In addition to the technical architecture, the infrastructural context also gains importance. Those who operate AI systems often process large amounts of sensitive data—from user data to business secrets to critical operational information.
Control over this data thus becomes a central question of digital sovereignty.
European infrastructure providers are gaining increasing relevance in this context. Providers like Hetzner, IONOS, OVHcloud, Scaleway, or STACKIT offer platforms where modern cloud-native architectures can be operated without being fully embedded in global platform ecosystems.
Especially Hetzner plays an important role in many modern platform architectures. The combination of powerful infrastructure, clear cost structure, and European legal framework makes the provider attractive for containerized platforms and data-intensive workloads.
In conjunction with Kubernetes-based platforms, environments are created where AI workloads can be operated under controllable conditions.
The integration of AI will be unavoidable for many companies in the coming years. Automated decision-making processes, intelligent assistance systems, and data-driven optimizations will become a fixed part of digital products.
But with every new AI function, the importance of the underlying platform architecture also grows.
Companies that fully integrate their AI systems into proprietary platform ecosystems risk long-term technological dependencies. Organizations that use open standards and portable architectures retain more control over their development.
The difference is not in the use of AI itself, but in how it is operated.
The next phase of cloud development will be strongly shaped by AI. Platform providers are investing billions in new models, data platforms, and infrastructure services. For companies, this creates an increasingly attractive but also increasingly dense platform ecosystem.
For this reason, it is worth taking a closer look at your own architecture.
Not every AI function needs to become a direct part of a platform universe.
Not every data pipeline needs to be tied to a single cloud.
And not every infrastructure decision is irreversible.
